Baby shot in womb
�Prime accused� BCL leader Sumon held
Two more people, including the alleged prime accused, were arrested yesterday in connection with the intra-party clash and firefight between factions of Chhatra League in Magura that killed one and injured a pregnant woman along with the baby in her womb. After day long drama, Raid Action Battalion (RAB) admitted around 9:45pm that they have arrested Sumon Sen, the alleged prime accused-- also the vice-president of Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL)Magura district unit-- from a house at Kallyanpur in the capital around 4:30pm.
Major Shafikul Siddique Azam of RAB-4, who led an operation to arrest the accused, said they would handover Sumon to Magura police as soon as possible.
Earlier in the day, Inspector Emamul Haque, investigation officer of the case, told The Independent that they arrested Nazrul Islam, 25, a BCL activist who once worked as a microbus driver. He was also an accused in several criminal cases. His father is Ali Hossain,
Police arrested Nazrul from a Khulna-bound bus of Eagle Paribahan during a search in Wapda area of Sripur Upzaila in Magura district around 6:30pm. Earlier, police had arrested two other people named Sumon and Sobhan, who were also named in the case filed over the shooting.
The baby, in her mothers womb, was injured by a bullet when her mother Nazma Khatun, eight-month pregnant, got shot in the abdomen during a firefight between Juba League factions in Magura on July 23. After taken to the Magura General Hospital, both the mother and the baby survived a two-hour caesarean operation. The newborn was later shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
