The government is going to create 8,433 posts, in different categories, for the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), to ensure security for 3 crore people living in these two metro cities.
Of the 8,433 posts, two posts of additional commissioner rank, two posts of joint police commissioner rank, three posts of deputy commissioner rank, 48 for additional DCs, 43 for assistant DCs, 175 for inspectors, 1,250 for sub-inspectors, 1,470 for assistant SI, 300 for nayeks, and 5,028 constables posts would be created.
The secretary committee on administrative improvement affairs, at a meeting in the secretariat yesterday, recommended creation of 7,139 posts for DMP. At the meeting, the ministry of home affairs placed a proposal to increase the posts of DMP, too.
Sources in the Cabinet Division said they will place the proposal of the CMP at the next meeting of the secretary committee, seeking its approval.
According to a proposal of DMP, the police headquarters sought to create 12,564 posts of different ranks for the DMP and 5,155 posts for the CMP, to maintain law and order, and also strengthen policing in the two metropolitan cities.
“Of the proposed posts, the finance ministry and the ministry of public administration gave permission to create 7,139 posts for DMP and 1,294 posts for the CMP,” the proposal said.
“At present, there are about two crore people living in a 416-square km area of the DMP, where 26,661 policemen are maintaining law and order. Only 5,785 policemen are providing the service to one crore people under the CMP,” the proposal added.
“At least 20 new wings, 59 police stations and some new sections of DMP have been created in the last few years. But, no post is yet to be created till date, affecting policing activities in the mega city,” the proposal said.
The proposal added that the proposed 8,433 posts would be filled up from the sanctioned 50,000 new posts approved by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on May 17 this year. Talking to The Independent, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said they will do everything to strengthen the police force to ensure security to city dwellers as well as the country’s people as a whole.
“The present people-police ratio is approximately 1:1027,” he said. The number of police personnel is comparatively lower than in other countries, he added.
There are a total of 163,000 personnel in the police department. Of them, 1,590 are working as Class I officers. This year, the police department has received the Independence Award for its contributions during the Liberation War.
