BNP wants the government to hold a fresh and inclusive election and it should not be a midterm poll, party spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon said yesterday.
“Question of holding a midterm election comes, when a government holds an election to examine its popularity before ending its tenure,” he said while addressing a press conference at the Naya Paltan party headquarters in the capital yesterday.
Ripon, also the international affairs secretary of the party, said the January 5, 2014, election was not a usual election and that’s why the BNP wants a new election, not a midterm poll.
He also thanked Awami League leader Syed Ashraful Islam for his sympathy to the BNP. Ashraf recently said the BNP would disappear if it does not take part in the next election.
“Indeed, there is no reason for the BNP to disappear since its leaders and activists would bear the ideal of late President Ziaur Rahman. The party will go to power with people’s mandate,” he said.
The BNP leader criticised the government for imposing value added tax on private educational institutions and urged it to reconsider the move.
Meanwhile, addressing a separate programme, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam said democracy should be restored through holding a new election.
He called upon the people to let the democratic forces to come to power to free the countrymen from ‘sick politics’.
Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal organised the programme at National Press Club on repression on women and children across the country.
Nazrul said effective democracy could be established only by holding an inclusive poll where people would be able to cast their votes freely.
Also present, former VC of Dhaka University Prof Emajuddin Ahmed said the children aren’t even safe in the mother’s womb. Presided over by Noor-e-Ara Safa, president of the organisaiton, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Selima Rahman, Shawkat Mahmud, AZM Tahmina Khanom and Shirin Sultana.
