A Barisal court yesterday morning sent 17 leaders and activists of Barisal city BNP unit to jail after rejecting their bail prayers. Earlier, they surrendered before the court. They are accused in three cases of political violence. The jailed BNP leaders and activists including acting secretary of city BNP and ward counselor Ziauddin Sikdar, city vice president Farid Uddin Ahmed and joint secretary of city BNP and ward counselor Mir Zahidul Kabir with others 14. Advocate Sheikh Humayun Kabir Masud, defense lawyers, said 19 leaders and activists of Barisal city BNP and its front organisations were accused in three cases of political violence and arson attack on a Dhaka bound launch at Barisal river port and two goods laden trucks at Rupatoli area of the city during January 5 to 17. 16 of the accused in the case yesterday surrendered before Barisal metropolitan court yesterday and appealed for bail. However, judge of the court rejecting their bail prayers ordered them to send to jail, court sources said. On the other hand Mir Zahidul Kabir, word counselor of BCC and joint secretary of city BNP appeared before the district judge court yesterday. His bail also was rejected by the court and he was also sent to the jail.
