Chittagong Metropolitan Police yesterday conducted an anti-militant drive at a madrasa in Lalkhan Bazar area of Chittagong. Police conducted a surprise raid at Al Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa owned by Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, Hefajat-e-Islam nayeb-e-ameer, around 5pm and ended it at 6:30pm. “It is a part of our regular drive. The force has started a block raid in other parts of the city as well and this was a part of that move,” said Kazi Muttaki Ibnu Minan, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (North) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police. “We have found nothing in the madrasa,” said Sheikh Md Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station. Sources said police searched the hostel rooms inside the madrasa but found nothing objectionable. On October 7 in 2013, three people, including two students, were killed and several others injured in an explosion in a room of a four-storey hostel of the madrasa.
Police later recovered huge explosives, bomb-making materials, 18 bottles of acid and four unexploded grenades from the surrounding areas of the madrasa.
