Sheikh Iraj
How did you get into painting and what motivated you?
I have loved painting since my childhood. My passion for art drove me to study painting. I completed Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Dhaka University in 2012. Right now, I am studying Chinese painting at Hebei University in China. I have come to Dhaka to organise my solo exhibition. Nature always has been a huge inspiration for me. I believe the beauty of nature also motivated me to take painting more seriously.
What does art mean to you?
For me, art is a language through which I can express myself. Through art I can portray my imagination. Art means everything to me.
What medium do you like to work with?
I prefer to work with water and acrylic.
Please tell us about your routine.
I have a simple routine. I work whenever I get free time.
How do you come up with ideas or techniques for new paintings?
I love to travel. I get ideas from my surroundings, places I visit and from the people I meet.
Please tell us about your biggest achievements.
The awards and certificates I have received for my work are my biggest achievements. Some of them are: the 5th Award in 14th Berger Young Art Competition 2009, Best Award in Painting Competition 2010 on Violence Against Woman, HIV/AIDS organised by UNAIDS, China-Bangladesh Friendship Award 2013, Certificate for Bangladesh Young Artist Workshop in China 2012, Certificate from International Art Exhibition of Art Area, China 2015. I also won the first place in the International Art Festival 2015, Korea.
Please tell us about your recent solo exhibition.
The title of my exhibition is ‘An Eternal Journey’. Nature is the theme of my paintings in this show. There are 35 paintings on display. So far, I am receiving an overwhelming response from visitors and from the media.
What’s your take on the present art market in Bangladesh?
Most of my paintings are sold outside Bangladesh. Compared to other markets of the world, our art market is not growing that fast. Many people still don’t understand the value of art. A painting is like a piece of land, with time its price only increases. I believe our government should take more steps to help young painters.
What’s next for you?
I am a full-time artist so I want to continue painting. Besides painting, I am also a TV drama director. So far, three of my dramas have been televised. After this exhibition, I will start working on some new TV dramas. In future, I would love to make films as well.
