To remember recently-demised multifaceted litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq who passed away last month, a commemorative event was organised on Sunday at the auditorium of National Museum in the capital’s Shahbag area. Presided over by Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman, Emeritus Professor Dr Sirajul Islam Chowdhury was present as the chief guest at the event. Director General of Bengal Foundation Luva Nahid Chowdhury moderated the event.
In the beginning of the programme, one-minute silence was observed in memory of the late noted writer and poet Syed Shamsul Haq. Then, the students from the Music Department of Jagannath University presented two chorus songs of Rabindranath Tagore.
Afterward, in the commemorative discussion, the veterans focused on the different aspects of the life and work of Syed Haq. Bengal Foundation Chairman Abul Khair, as the first speaker of the event, recalled his fond memories of his intimacy with the poet and his family. He said, “At the hands of Syed Shamsul Haq and Kalim Sharafi, Bengal Foundation started its journey. The logo of Bengal Foundation was designed by Syed Haq. He was someone like a friend and a guardian. Some people never die and Syed Haq belongs to this group of people. Syed Shamsul Haq was among us and he will be.”
In the speech of chief guest, Professor Sirajul Islam said Syed Shamsul Haq’s main identity is as a litterateur. He also described the lifestyle of the litterateur. He said all the things those were touched by Syed Haq’s talent get full of life. His hard work blended with his talent made him one of the prominent litterateurs of the country.
Professor Anisuzzaman in his speech informed that the duration of Syed Shamsul Haq’s literary practice spanned over six decades. During this entire time, he could reach to the extraordinary altitude from a plain state. He always kept him changing. He thought about new subjects, thought about using newness in the language. He involved the political and social context of Bangladesh with his writings. He never stepped down from his position as far as political and social awareness were concerned.”
Noted litterateur Selina Hossain, cultural personality-writer Mofidul Haq and thespian Aly Zaker also discussed about the life and work of Syed Shamsul Haq.
To note, Syed Shamsul Haq (Born: 27 December 1935—Died: 27 September 2016) was one of the most powerful, prolific and versatile poet and writer of Bangladesh. He was a major literary voice of present time. He wrote poetry, plays, novels and essays.
He won every major award there is in the field of literature in the country, among them, the Bangla Academy Award (1966), Ekushey Padak (1984), Independence Day Award (2000), National Poetry Award (1997) and National Poetry Honour (2001). l
