Jamaat a liability: Prof Emajuddin

UNB

Pro-BNP intellectual Prof Emajuddin Ahmed yesterday said BNP has reached a decision that there is no need for Jamaat to be there in the 20-party alliance as the Islamist party has become a liability for it, UNB reports.
Meanwhile, Jamaat expressed its surprise over the statement by Emajudidn Ahmed terming it objectionable and confusing, says our staff reporter.
While addressing a discussion organised by Krishak Sramik Janata League (KSJL) at the National Press Club in the capital, Emajuddin said, “Under the current context of the country, it seems only one political party is a barrier to forging a national unity. But, the government can ban the party whenever it wants.”
Emajuddin, a former vice chancellor of Dhaka University, further said, “Begum Khaleda Zia’s party and she herself have decided there’s no need for keeping that party (Jamaat) in that way in the 20-party as it was. It (Jamaat) has now become a liability.” He said a big segment of Jamaat leaders and activists has no connection with war crimes as they were born after the Liberation War. “I think they won’t want either the efforts for forging the national unity to be turned futile. They can take a rational decision (in this regard).”
Emajuddin said there is no scope for the nation to sit idle the way militancy is spreading. “A national unity must be formed to resist extremism with united efforts.”
Mentioning that militancy is a global problem not local one, he said this problem is still not turned very critical in Bangladesh. “It’s possible to get rid of the problem, if all get united.”
KSJL president Abdul Kader Siddique said he had invited all parties, except Jamaat and Hasanul Haq Inu-led Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), to join the programme.
However, neither Awami League nor
its any alliance partners participated
in the discussion.
Kader Siddique urged the Prime Minister to hold a national convention of all parties, except Jamaat and Inu-led JSD, to put up a strong resistance against militancy.
The KSJL chief said he will meet BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday to discuss the country’s current situation.
Expressing its surprise over the comments by Prof Emajuddin, Jamaat said, “It has become a big question as to why people like Emajuddins are making such objectionable and confusing statements.”
Whose purpose are they trying to serve? Who agenda they are trying to implement when the unity of the 20-party alliance should be strengthened further? ” Jamaat executive member and former lawmaker Syed Abduallh Mohammed Taher said in a statement. He also called upon the former Dhaka University vice chancellor to withdraw his statement.
The Jamaat leader said Emajudidn Ahmed has no authority to speak on behalf of the 20-party alliance since he was not appointed as the spokesperson of the alliance
