Grameenphone, the country’s largest mobile phone operator, has claimed that the Go Broadband operations, operated by the company through a joint venture, are being run after taking due approval from the regulator. The Independent yesterday published a news item on allegations against GP and others of Wi-Max Policy violation. The mobile operator issued a statement in this regard yesterday, a day after The Independent contacted GP to obtain its comment over a letter issued by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) asking the operator and its two partners -- ADN Telecom and Agni Systems to explain and provide details of services of Go Broadband, following allegations of policy violations. The statement issued by Grameenphone Head of External Communications Sayed Talat Kamal said, “We have received a letter from BTRC regarding Go Broadband and we intend to respond to that letter in due course of time.”
“GO Broadband is a joint venture of ADN Telecom Limited (ADN), Agni Systems Limited (Agni) and Grameenphone Ltd. (GP), for which specific approvals were taken from the Regulator and operators are providing the services following the conditions of the said Approvals," it further said. Pointing out six allegations, the BTRC, in a letter issued on March 30, has asked GP, ADN and Agni to present their explanations by April 13. On February 28, Internet Service Providers Association Bangladesh (ISPAB) submitted the complaint against Grameenphone and its two partners. As per the Telecom Act 2001 (Amendment), the commission can fine the operator or even suspend or cancel the licence for violation of the guidelines. The commission has also asked about the types of services Go provide and how, and has asked for a copy of the agreement between Go and the state-owned Sonali Bank.
