11 honoured with Bangla Academy fellowship, award

Seven prominent figures of the country were honoured with ‘Bangla Academy Fellowship -2015’ for their contributions to different sectors. The fellowships were conferred at the 38th annual general meeting of the academy held on Saturday at its premises in the capital. In the programme, four honourary awards conducted by Bangla Academy have been given to four poets and writers  for their contribution to the field of literature. Ekushey Padak winning poet Mohammad Rafiq received ‘Mazharul Islam Kabita Puroshkar 2015’ while poet-writer Kaisul Haque got ‘Sadat Ali Akond Sahitya Purushkar 2015’.
On the other hand, science writer and rights activists Dr Ajoy Roy received ‘Meher Kabir Bijnan Sahitya Purushkar’, and journalist-writer M Asif got ‘Halima-Sharfuddin Bigyan- Lekhak Puroshkar 1420-21’.
Mohammad Rafiq  and rights activists Dr Ajoy Roy received the prize worth of TK 1 lakh in cheque while poet-writer Kaisul Haque got TK 50,000 and journalist-writer M Asif got TK 30,000.
Moreover, ‘Bangla Academy Fellowship 2015’was given to Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of non-government organisation Brac, for his contribution to education and social progress; the Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam and journalist Abed Khan for their contribution to journalism.
Former Bangladesh Bank governor Professor Mohammad Farashuddin and honorary associate of University of Oxford Prof Shapan Adnan were awarded for their contribution in the field of economics.   
Professor Anupam Sen received the award for his contribution to the field of social science while Papia Sarwar for her contribution to music.
The annual general meeting began with a chorus rendition of the National Anthem presented by Surer Dhara artistes under the leadership of noted Tagore singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya. Then, Bangla Academy chairman, professor emeritus Anisuzzaman and Director General Shamsuzzaman Khan handed over the awards and fellowships to the recipients.
After the award giving ceremony, Shamsuzzaman Khan presented the annual report of 2014-15 of the academy, while Mohammad Anwar Hossain, secretary of the academy, presented the annual budget of 2015-16 at the general meeting.
To note, Mahfuz Anam, and Papia Sarwar could not attend the award giving ceremony as they were out of the country. Ferdousi Anam, sister-in-law of Mahfuz Anam and Sarwar A Alam, husband of Papia Sarwar received the awards on their behalf .  l
