Bangladeshi groups reject draft climate deal

UNB

Rejecting the latest draft agreement of the UN climate conference in Paris, civil society and non-government organisations that represented Bangladesh in the conference demanded inclusion of historical responsibilities, the polluter-pay principle and common but differentiated responsibilities as guiding principles in the draft agreement, reports UNB from Paris.
They also expressed their concern that developed countries have taken up positions against the principles mentioned above flouting earlier agreements.
They raised the demand at a press conference, held at Le Bourget, Paris Climate Conference Place on Saturday afternoon.
Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD read out a written statement at the press conference moderated by Ziaul Hoque Mukta of CSRL.
Among others, Golam Rabbani of CCDF/BCAS and Jahangir Hasan Masum of CDP also spoke at the press conference.
In his written statement, Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said it is the responsibility of developed countries to provide the bulk of climate finance, as they have done the bulk of the damage to it in the Industrial Age.
He also noted that even the target of containing temperature rise has been raised to 2 degrees Celsius, whereas the scientists’ recommendation was to keep it below 1.5 degrees, he added.
