The midas touch of newly appointed coach Sean Lane has changed Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) as they recently stunned Abahani Limited in the Bangaldesh Premier League by a comprehensive victory margin of 4–0.
Now, MSC seem to be back on their own perch with the scoreline. Their latest victory over Abahani tastes like sweet revenge for the first leg defeat (3-0) and brings back the memory of what they did way back in 1975.
Of late, it seemed that MSC had forgotten how to win against Abahani. But under the newly recruited English coach, Sean Lane, they are going in the right direction by defeating Abahani after four years.
In fact, MSC played their best game in recent seasons to outshine the mighty Abahani Limited, who were looking unbeatable since the AFC Cup competition. This victory will boost the morale of MSC, who have been facing relegation threats in the league for the past few years.
Sean Lane, however, remains unmoved by the euphoria created by his team's win. He told The Independent that he was not a magician and that proper instructions and guidelines changed the attitude of the players.
“It's not magic at all. It’s only common sense and logic. It was difficult because the players had played under three coaches before my team. So, they were exposed to different cultures, ideas, methods and styles. I only asked them to train even harder and came up with a game plan,” he said.
Asked about the message to the players, Sean Lane said: “The message was quite simple. It's all about being consistent. They have come to understand that it's necessary to have a game plan before every game. I always make different plans for different matches. Before the match against Abahani, I also came up with a plan and just tried to motivate them.”
“Actually, the boys had lost their confidence. They did not believe that they can win. We have to change this way of thinking. They should have believe that we can beat any team,” he added.
Replying to a query, Sean Lane said the players lacked fitness to play with full strength. “It was very, very hard. We had to work two sessions a day. They did not have proper fitness.”
“I advised them on how to be fit. I gave them some guidelines on how to keep their fitness,” he added.
