After lawmaker Suntan Muhammed Mansur, another Ganaforum MP-elect, Mukabbir Khan, is going to take oath at Jatiya Sangsad today, three months after the December 30 parliamentary polls. Mukabbir as well as Parliament secretariat sources yesterday confirmed that he would take oath at Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury’s chamber at 12 noon. Mukabbir, who was elected from Sylhet-2 under the Ganoforum symbol of the rising sun, claimed that he will take oath as per his party’s decision. However, a central leader of Ganoforum denied this. “I am going to take oath in line with the decision of Ganoforum. I have been asked by the party to take oath. I have sent letter to the
Speaker in accordance with the decision,” said Mukabbir. Mukabbir, a presidium member of Ganoforum, was supposed to take oath along with Mansur on March 7. But on March 6, he informed the Speaker that he would take oath a day later.
Ganoforum leader Suntan Muhammed Mansur took oath by ignoring the party decision not to join Parliament. Ganoforum had expelled Mansur from the party immediately after he took oath. Ganoforum sources said they have written to the Speaker and the chief election commissioner to cancel the Parliament membership of Mansur as he joined the House in violation of the party decision.
Parliament Secretariat sources, however, said they have not received such a letter.
Both the Ganoforum and Jatiya Oikyafront, which includes the BNP as a major partner, had rejected the poll results over alleged vote rigging and decided not to join Parliament.
BNP and Ganoforum had won only eight seats from among the 300 constituencies. Of them, the BNP got six seats.
With Mukabbir taking oath, there will be only six BNP lawmakers elect who are yet to take oath.
According to the Constitution, these six would have to take oath within 90 days after the election (that is by April 30), otherwise their seats would be automatically declared vacant.
