The government yesterday (Monday) nationalised a total of 43 non-government secondary schools as part of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s decision, in principle, to set up at least one government high school in each upazila. The Secondary and Higher Education Division yesterday (Monday) issued a circular in this respect, saying the 43 non-government secondary schools have been nationalised with effect from 13 September 2018.
It also said the existing teachers of these schools would not be allowed to take transfers to other educational institutions. The teachers of the nationalised schools will enjoy all facilities from the date of nationalisation onwards. On September 13, the government had nationalised a total of 44 non-government secondary schools. The total number of government high schools now stands at 552.

On receiving the directions of the PM, a survey was conducted in 2017 to find out the number of government high schools. It was found that there were no government high schools in 315 upazilas.
Following the survey, the government gave directives to nationalise the existing non-government schools in each upazila last year.
