The government has decided to create 15,000 more posts, including 400 at the officers’ level—in the ranks of additional director-general, deputy director-general, director, additional director and deputy director—for the country’s border force, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Of these posts, two posts of additional director-general, seven posts of the rank of deputy director-general, 49 posts of director, 207 posts of additional director and 135 posts of deputy director will be created, disclosed sources in the BGB and the home ministry.
All the posts for the BGB will be created in three phases. At least 5,000 posts will be created by December this year, the sources added. A high-ranking official of the Public Security Division of the home ministry said on condition of anonymity that they are creating 5,000 posts, of a total of 15,000, as soon as possible. The personnel will be appointed before the parliamentary polls.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already given her consent to create the 15,000 new posts. Of the posts, the public administration ministry has agreed to create 5,000 posts, as we can deploy them during the upcoming national polls to aid the civil administration after completing the process of sappointments,” he said. After the personnel are appointed, they will be posted at different battalions of the border force,” he added.
The official added that two new BGB battalions would also be formed in and around the Dhaka Metropolitan city area so that the members of the force could be deployed in and around the capital, if needed.
The BGB’s strength would be increased to deploy the personnel at the borders with a view to ensure cross-border security, the official added. With the proposed 15,000 posts, the total strength of the BGB would stand at 70,000, the official further disclosed. Sources said, “As per Vision 2014 of the paramilitary force, new units, battalions and an aviation wing would be created, and the necessary arms and digital devices would be procured for the paramilitary force.”
Two new battalions of the BGB would be formed in Gazipur and Narayanganj within this year. There are only two battalions of BGB at its headquarters in Peelkhana. During crises, the members of the paramilitary force are deployed in and around the capital to aid civil administration, helping maintain law and order.
Around 54,000 troopers of the BGB maintain border security with the neighbouring countries, India and Myanmar. Bangladesh has 539 km of porous border with India and Myanmar. Of this, the BGB has so far secured 432 km with India and 81 km with Myanmar.
The paramilitary force has already introduced a ‘smart border management system’ by installing state-of-the-art technology at the border points. The BGB has also formed a ‘Border Tourism’ section under the BGB welfare trust to help tourists visit historical places and other tourist attractions, located in the 4,427 border areas of the country. The BGB is going to set up an air wing at Baitul Izzat and Satkania.
