Expanding nursing education

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday launched Bangladesh's first-ever and highly anticipated postgraduate nursing education institution by unveiling the plaque of inauguration stone at Mugdapara in the capital. NIANER was initiated by the PM of Bangladesh during her visit to Korea in May 2010. Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has termed the inauguration of ‘National Institute of Advanced Nursing Education and Research (NIANER)’ as Bangladesh's historic moment in the health education sector, supported by KOICA. KOICA's Vice President Jinho Song mentioned that this project is embodied with Korea and Bangladesh's shared commitment for cooperation and development and ensured closer ties between both countries for decades to come.

Only doctors cannot provide health care to patients. Role of nurses is important. Nurses play an important role in promoting public health. Traditionally, the focus of health promotion by nurses has been on disease prevention and changing the behaviour of individuals with respect to their health. However, their role as promoters of health is more complex, since they have multi-disciplinary knowledge and experience of health promotion in their nursing practice. There is a great demand for nurses in the country but the number of nurses is far less than the demand. More colleges and institutes should be established for grooming up nurses to cater to the needs. Nurses should be properly educated and trained for rendering health care to the increasing number of patients.

In our country, treatment of patients by fake doctors and nurses endangers life of patients. This malpractice should be stopped forthwith. During the past few years the country saw mushrooming growth of hospitals and diagnostic centres under private initiatives but the number of nurses has not increased according to the demand.

The role of nurses includes clinical nursing practices, consultation, follow-up treatment, patient education and illness prevention. This improves the availability of health care services, reduces symptoms of chronic diseases, increases cost-effectiveness and enhances customers' experiences of health care services. In addition, health promotion by nurses can lead to many positive health outcomes including adherence, quality of life, patients' knowledge of their illness and self-management.

A person bereft of higher education due to financial constraints can take up nursing as profession. This will help him/her earn bread for themselves and their families. There is a great demand for nurses abroad. What is needed is proper education and training. In the circumstances the government should establish more nursing colleges and institutes in the country. Entrepreneurs and NGOs may also come forward in this regard.
