Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mohammed Abul Kalam on Saturday emphasised the importance of preparing for medium term planning combining Rohingya humanitarian response and development plans for the host communities in Bangladesh, reports UNB.
"This problem is not created by Bangladesh. We are the custodians only until these forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals can go home safely," he said while addressing a joint information sharing meeting on Rohingya relief and host communities as the chief guest at a hotel in Cox's Bazar.
Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) and Coxsbazar CSO NGO Forum (CCNF) jointly organized the meeting, said a press release.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Mohammed Mahidur Rahman presided over the meeting.
The key note presentation was given by Margo Baars and Rhonda Gossen of ISCG while its senior coordinator Sumbul Rizvi gave the welcome remarks at the event.
In his speech, Kalam said tension has been increasing in host community areas and camps due to lack of boundaries.
"Infrastructure which was meant to support only 2000 people is now supporting 30,000 people, he said.
He also highlighted the need of a development plan along with humanitarian response.
Kalam also emphasised for peaceful coexistence, assessing impact both in individual and community level, equity in distribution, inclusive participatory mechanism in planning and implementation.
He urged the international community to strongly come with support to the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals. "Otherwise it will be difficult for Bangladesh to continue providing support," he added.
Among others, Civil Surgeon Dr Abdus Salam, Divisional Forest Officer Md Ali Kabir and Additional Superintendent of Police Chailau Marma, also spoke at the consultation meeting.
The event was jointly moderated by CCNF co-chairs Abu Morshed Chowdhury and Rezaul Karim Chowdhury.
