The government is planning to ensure housing facilities for public servants in a bigger way during its present tenure to remove their longstanding accommodation crisis, reports UNB. “Housing facilities will gradually be ensured for all public servants from Senior Secretary to employees,” Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told UNB. He said some projects are already going on in various parts of the capital to meet the accommodation demand of the public servants. Mustafa Kamal said a number of projects are likely to be placed before Ecnec in its next couple of meetings in this regard. Asked about the demand of the exact number of flats, he said, “It’ll take some time to figure it out.”
He said a project for constructing flats for the public servants are going on in the city’s Uttara and Jheelmeel areas while similar project will be undertaken at Purbachal. The minister said the government is sincere about ensuring housing facilities for public servants as it is their basic need and constitutional rights. “Perhaps, the demand is too high for which we’re unable to match with the arrangements.
But, the Prime Minister from the very beginning is emphasising the need for addressing the accommodation problem of public servants irrespective of officials and employees,” he added. The minister mentioned that a project was undertaken last month for constructing flats for BGB officials at its headquarters.
Meanwhile, he said, some 4,000 residential plots under the Uttara Residential Model Town (3rd Phase) project have been handed over to the allottees while the remaining ones be will be transferred gradually.
According to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, the government is constructing 448 apartments for the employees of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, 10-storey residential buildings for government employees at abandoned land property in Segunbagicha and Mohammadpur areas and a 20-storey residential building for Judges of the Supreme Court in the city.
Besides, some 38,244 plots will be developed and 70,377 apartments constructed across the country under various projects.
The government also has a plan to build apartments for officers and judges at government residential colonies in Azimpur and Motijheel areas and 28 apartments for ministers at Bailey Road.
As per the data provided by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, there are only 24,000 government residences in the country against around 1.3 million public servants. The rest of the houses are in the district and upazila towns.
Of those, around 15,000 houses in Dhaka and Chittagong cities. There are about 13,000 houses in Dhaka against 200,000 public servants.
The Directorate of Government Accommodation (DoGA) only maintains the houses in Dhaka and Chittagong cities.
The rest of the houses are maintained by the district administrations and executive engineers of local the Public Works Department offices.
