Jatiya Party (Zafar) will be staying with the BNP-led 20-party alliance despite the death of its Chairman Kazi Zafar Ahmed, according to party leaders. Kazi Zafar formed a new faction of Jatiya Party after being expelled by HM Ershad over differences in participating with the election time government in 2013. He reconstituted the party with the same name. Some 31 presidium members of Jatiya Party joined Kazi Zafar led Jatiya Party. Most of them are former lawmakers and many of them were ministers. Ershad led Jatiya Party participated in the January 5 2014 election but Kazi Zafar led Jatiya Party along with the 20-party alliance had boycotted it. Acting chairman of Jatiya Party Dr TIM Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury told The Independent that they have not taken any decision as yet about their next course of action. “We have just completed the Qulkhawani (post funeral rites) of our leader. I don’t want to make any comment at this moment about our next course of action. We will take a decision soon after holding a party presidium meeting soon,” he said. Asked whether they would remain within the fold of BNP-led 20-party alliance, he replied in the affirmative saying, “Possibly we will not go out of our previous stance.” Rabbi was selected as party acting chairman at an urgent meeting of the presidium committee held after the death of Kazi Zafar Ahmed. Mostafa Jamal Haider, secretary general of the party, also echoed the same view of the acting chairman that they would take the party’s next course of action in next presidium meeting. “We will sit together and take our next course of action very soon,” he said. Replying to a question, the JP (Zafar) leader said they would remain in the 20-party alliance as its component.
