As part of implementing "Forces Goal 2030", the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) is going to set up an independent training unit, named "105 Advance Jet Training Unit", soon.
It would train pilots selected for operating the BAF's advanced jet fighters, like the MIG-29, F-7BGI and the F-7BG, government sources said.
For setting up the training unit, 275 posts, including those of a commandant, three squadron commanders and two flight commanders, would be created, the sources added.
The defence ministry has prepared a proposal in this regard. It would be sent to the Cabinet Division for being placed before the next meeting of the secretary committee on administration affairs, according to the sources.
Advanced jet fighters were inducted into the air force recently to face the challenge of the 21st century.
“The new unit will provide modern and advanced training only to jet fighter pilots, as the flying of the advanced fighters and training are a costly affair,” the proposal said.
Already, the finance ministry and the ministry of public administration have approved the creation of 275 posts, though the BAF had sought 291 posts for the new training unit.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, too, has shown the green light for the new training unit and the creation of such posts.
Earlier, the Bangladesh Air Force created 195 posts for the Bangabandhu Aeronautical Centre (BAC), a Bangladesh state-owned aerospace and defence security and advanced technology company, to increase the force’s skill development.
The BAF, formed on September 28, 1971 during the War of Liberation with only three aircraft, now operates hi-tech fourth generation multi-role air superiority fighters, supersonic air defence interceptors, fighter ground attack aircraft, long range fixed wing transport aircraft, different types of utility helicopters and training aircraft.
It also has long range surface-to-air missiles and highly sophisticated air defence radars to safeguard the nation's skies.
The BAF members have been involved in various combat and humanitarian operations, from the Bangladesh Liberation War during which it was born, to supporting international efforts, including the coalition of the Gulf War and United Nations peacekeeping missions.
