BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday said her party will join the next election under a neutral government, not under the Sheikh Hasina-led one, reports UNB. “We have long been saying the election won’t be fair under them (current government). We have also said we would surely take part in the election but it has to be held under a neutral government,” she said. The BNP chief further said, “We’ve seen many elections under you (Hasina) and those were not fair. No election will be fair under you in the future, too.”
She came up with the remarks when leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal met her at her Gulshan office marking its 38th founding anniversary.
Khaleda alleged that the ruling party men have got desperate to cling onto power by resorting to repressive acts.
She said the government is also using law enforcers to oppress BNP leaders and activists to hang onto power.
The BNP chairperson asked the Sramik Dal leaders to reorganise their organisation to make it ready for joining the movement for ‘restoration’ of democracy.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has 900 candidates ready to be fielded for 300 parliamentary constituencies across the country in the next election, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.
“If there is an election-time caretaker government and a congenial atmosphere for polls, the BNP is ready to take part in the poll,” he said while talking to reporters after placing a wreath at the mazar of party founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar yesterday.
Fakhrul and leaders of Sramik
Dal placed wreaths at the mazar to mark the party’s 38th founding anniversary.
Replying to a question, the BNP leader said there was no need to compare the BNP’s work with that of the ruling Awami League (AL).
“The BNP is a pro-election political party and believes in elections,” he added.
Fakhrul alleged that the country’s democratic space was being reduced. "The AL is getting isolated from people for choking the democratic space in the country," he said.
“The ruling party is trying to establish a one-party rule. If a free and fair election is held, it'll see how the people have reacted to their effort in doing so,” he added.
Replying to another question, Fakhrul said the 51 organising committees formed earlier to visit 77 organisational districts were performing their assigned tasks.
He said a fair election, if held, would reveal the extent of corruption the AL had committed.
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan alleged that
the price hike of essential commodities was, in effect, reducing workers’ wages. He also alleged that workers were being killed because of unsafe workplaces.
Sramik Dal president Anwar Hossain and general secretary
Nurul Islam Khan Nasim,
among others, were present on the occasion.
