Dhaka has so far received about 550 demand letters, after attestation by the Bangladesh high commission in Kuala Lumpur, to send workers to Malaysia under the Government-to-Government (G2G) scheme, according to sources. After completion of all procedures, including registration of workers, immigration security clearance and biomedical tests, the first batch of Bangladeshi workers is likely to leave Dhaka for Kuala Lumpur in the middle of next month, the sources said. About 50 Malaysian companies have submitted around 12,000 demand letters to the Bangladesh high commission in Kuala Lumpur through the online system to recruit workers. The high commission has been sending those to Bangladesh after scrutiny, the sources added. “Around 12,000 visas for Bangladeshi workers are being processed as the Bangladesh high commission has started sending demand letters to Dhaka. As far as we know, Dhaka has received 550 demands letters till Monday,” said Ruhul Amin Swapan, secretary general of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA).
He also said 50 Malaysian companies have submitted request letters to the high commission.
On Friday, Bangladesh’s state minister for foreign affairs, Shahriar Alam, made the formal announcement over the  opening up of the Malaysian labour market for Bangladeshi workers in Kuala Lumpur.
Alam said more than 50,000 demand letters will be attested in phases within this month.
He expects that a large number of workers will be heading for Malaysia this year, more than the total number of workers Bangladesh had sent to other countries across the world in 2016.
The Malaysian government had stopped hiring Bangladeshi workers in 2009 after experiencing the entry of a large number of illegal workers between 2007 and 2008.
On February 18 last year, the two countries signed the G2G Plus deal, involving the recruiting agencies for selecting and sending workers to Malaysia in five sectors to avoid malpractices.
Under the agreement, about 1.5 million workers are likely to be sent to Malaysia in five years to work in plantations, construction sites, service, agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
