Bangladesh Telecommunica-tion Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has decided to take stern action against Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) operators Banglalion and Qubee, if they fail to pay government dues.
The BTRC decision came at the latest commission meeting presided over by its Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood.
According to BTRC data, the total dues of Banglalion Communications Limited are Tk 62 crore and 62 lakh which accounts for licence fee for fiscal year 2015-16 and revenue sharing and spectrum charge as of June 2016. Meanwhile, Augere Wireless Broadband Bangladesh (Qubee) owes the telecom regulator Tk 17 crore and 76 lakh.
It was also decided in the Commission meeting that the two BWA operators had to pay their dues within two weeks and if they fail to pay their dues in two weeks, the regulator will suspend 10 per cent of the traffic through the operators for every 15 days.
This suspension will increase in every two weeks in equal rate until they pay the dues. So for every two weeks of non-payment the operators will lose additional 10 per cent of its traffic, according to the Commission meeting decision.
“When the operation of the WiMAX operators comes down to zero because of non-payment of dues, the BTRC will file cases to realise the money and cancel licence under Public Demand Recovery Act 1913. We are determined to collect the government dues,” BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood told The Independent.
