Gazipur factory fire kills five

Six persons, including a school-teacher, were killed and ten others injured in a fire after two boilers exploded in a furnace oil-making factory at Pubail area of Gazipur city yesterday afternoon. Amongst those killed, three were identified as Jebun Nesa, 40, a teacher at Baroibari primary school, Selim Mollah, 45, a security guard of the factory and resident of Basugaon area of Gazipur city, and Kaosar Hossain, 40, from Baghoria village of Madaripur district, who was a worker at the factory. However, the others are yet to be identified.
Sources in the police and fire services said two boilers of Mart Metal and Chemical Industries Ltd burst one after another around 4pm on Saturday. A tank lorry parked on the factory premises caught fire. The blaze also spread to the tin roof of a shed of the factory and blew up the roof, hurling it some 300 feet away. At the same time, the school-teacher, Jebun Nesa, who was on her way home in an auto-rickshaw on the Gazipur-Pubail road from Baroibari High School, was killed. The driver of the auto-rickshaw, identified as Shadhin, was seriously injured.
Locals rushed to the spot and found the five bodies of the factory workers. They also rescued two injured persons—Abdul Kadir, 55, and Kamal, 49, both supervisors of the factory, and rushed them to the Gazipur Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital, along with Shadhin. They had suffered around 90 per cent burns. Later, they were sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after their conditions deteriorated.
Station officer of Joydebpur fire service station, Hasibur Rahman, said, “Six fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and doused the flames after about two hours of frantic efforts.” Gazipur deputy commissioner SM Alam visited the spot after the incident. He said a three-member committee, led by Gazipur additional magistrate Raihanul Islam, has been formed to probe the incident. A sum of Tk. 10,000 was allocated to the family of each deceased person for burial services.
