DU students, teachers want edn institutions’ closure

Emergency meeting today

Students representing most of the departments of Dhaka University (DU) have started boycotting their academic activities as part of their demand for temporary suspension of academic activities o the campus. The agitating students went on hunger strike and held procession on the campus while the Dhaka University’s Central Students Union (DUCSU) and other bodies placed memorandum in favour of the closure.

Meanwhile, the DU authorities have convened an emergency meeting at 10 in the morning on Monday. Confirming the matter, DU Proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabbani said various departments have boycotted the classes and the exams. DUCSU leaders and general students also gave us memorandums keeping all these in mind. We will seat in a emergency meeting Monday morning.”

Besides, the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA) yesterday called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take steps in suspending all academic institutions temporarily as safety measure over coronavirus outbreak across the world.

They requested the PM to order respective ministry to close all academic institutions or effective summer vacation before schedule time immediately, said a press release singed by the federation President Prof ASM Maksud Kamal and Secretary General Prof Md. Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan.

At DU, the students of first year, most of whom stay at the gonorooms of the dormitories in an unhygienic atmosphere with around 30 students together, demanded suspension of all academic activities. Forming a human chain yesterday at the base of Raju Sculpture, the students placed a three-point charter of demands. They also placed a memorandum to the vice-chancellor (VC). Their two other demands are — installing medical camp to detect coronavirus as soon as possible and ensuring proper treatment for coronavirus patient if there is any.
