A case has been filed against Manabzamin Editor-in-Chief Matiur Rahman Chowdhury and 31 others under the Digital Security Act accusing them of publishing ‘false’ news and circulating it on social media. Ruling Awami League lawmaker from Magura-1, Saifuzzaman Shikhor, filed the case with Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Monday night. In the case statement the AL lawmaker alleged that Manabzamin published a story on expelled Juba Mahila League leader Shamima Nur Papia. The story contained false information and without directly mentioning names, implicated several lawmakers. When the news
was shared on social media, the others accused defamed Shekhor, said Shujanur Islam, a sub-inspector of the police station. “The accused have tried to create a negative impression on people’s mind and disrupt the law and order situation,” the police officer said quoting the case document. The other accused include Al Amin, a staff reporter of Manabzamin who wrote the story, and some people who shared the news on social media, the SI said.
When contacted by reporters, Manabzamin Editor Matiur said, “We did not mention anyone’s name in our report. So, there is no scope of defaming anyone.”
