Dhaka suspends on-arrival visa for Chinese nationals

Dhaka has suspended on-arrival visa provision for Chinese nationals in view of the outbreak of deadly Coronavirus that so far claimed the lives of 304 people in China.

“We have decided to stop issuing on-arrival visa for the Chinese nationals temporarily but they can enter the country by obtaining visa (from Bangladesh mission in Beijing) after producing medical certificate to prove that they are not carrying the (corona) virus,” foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told newsmen at a press briefing at the foreign ministry here.

The minister said they have already informed the Chine ambassador here about the decision and “they don’t have any objection on it.”

Momen said he also requested the Chinese nationals working in various development projects here to avoid travelling China in next one month.

“Side by Side, we also discourage the Chinese nationals to travel Bangladesh amid the outbreak of the virus,” he added.

The foreign minister said he also suggested the Chinese authorities not to deploy new staff from China in their ongoing development projects here.

“It would be a temporally situation… we are just trying to control the traffic,” Momen said.

The foreign minister ruled out speculations of hampering Bangladesh-China trade relations due to the outbreak of the virus.

Earlier, due to Coronavirus, the government installed thermal scanner at the country’s all three international airports while the health ministry has also ordered screening of all people coming to Bangladesh from India through the Benapole land port.

Bangladesh yesterday brought back 312 of its nationals from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of deadly coronavirus and kept them at a quarantine unit at Ashkona.

As the death toll from China’s coronavirus epidemic soared to 304 on Sunday, a number of countries imposed extraordinary Chinese travel bans to combat the spread of the disease.

The United States and Australia are leading a growing list of countries that are putting temporary but sweeping travel restrictions on Chinese nationals or those who have travelled to China within the last two weeks.
