The Jatiya Sramik League, a trade union body affiliated to the Awami League, got a new set of leaders at its 13th triennial council session, held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital yesterday (Saturday). Fazlul Haque Montu was named president and KM Azam Khasru general secretary of the organisation at the second session of the council. The organisation’s former vice-president, Mollah Abul Kalam Azad, was named executive president.
Montu was the executive president and Khasru was the publicity secretary of the immediate past central committee of the Sramik League. At the second session of the council, a closed-door meeting was held at the auditorium of the Institution of Engineers. After the meeting, Awami League general secretary, Obaidul Quader, announced the names of the president and secretary and executive president of the new committee.
The last council session of the trade body was held seven years back on July 17, 2019, where Sukkur Mahmud and Sirajul Islam were made president and secretary, respectively. The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founded the organisation on October 11, 1969.
Briefing the media, the AL general secretary said seven names for the president’s post and twelve for the general secretary’s post were proposed by the councillors, who came from all over the country to attend the council.
“Among them, we selected Fazlul Haque Montu and Azam Khasru after discussing the names with the organisational chief, Sheikh Hasina. I hope the leaders and workers of the Sramik League will accept the two,” said Quader.
Freedom fighter Fazlul Haque Montu has been involved in trade union politics for the past 45 years. He was also president of the Pabna district unit of the Sramik League, while Azam Khasru was a CBA leader of Sonali Bank.
Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the first session of the triennial council of the Sramik League by hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem. She also released pigeons and balloons in the morning.
AL general secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader, State Minister for Labour and Employment, Begum Munnujan Sufian, and AL labour affairs secretary, Habibur Rahman Siraj, also spoke at the function.
BJSL president Alhaz Sukkur Mahmud presided over the inaugural session of the conference, while its executive president Fazlul Haque Montu read out the obituary reference and general secretary Sirajul Islam delivered the welcome address.
