Halal travel can unveil a new horizon of Bangladesh tourism industry. In recent years, halal travel has become an inevitable sector of world tourism. This sort of tourism is especially catered for Muslim requirements and it is undergoing a boom in world tourism. Worth $177bn in 2017, the market is expected to reach $274bn by 2023, according to the state of the Islamic economy report 2018-19.
The report – produced annually by analyst Thomson Reuters – says that the halal travel sector is “spreading its wings through offering cultural, historical, religious and beach tourism. Muslim-friendly beach resorts are proving particularly popular.”
The report states that Bangladesh can achieve big gains from this sector.
As the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI), the position of Bangladesh is just behind Iran on halal travel index where Turkey is right after that.
According to state of the Islamic economy report of GIEI, top 15 countries in halal travel index are, Malaysia, UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Jordan, Qatar, Pakistan, Kuwait, Indonesia, Brunei, Sudan, Iran, Bangladesh and Turkey.
State of the Islamic Economy report said that, ‘OIC countries are increasingly catering to such requirements, with the GCC making a strong push for Muslim-friendly tourism, with a marked focus on family-friendly hotels and resorts. Indeed, beach tourism is a particularly strong growth segment, reflected in Turkey’s halal-friendly resorts having a turnover of US$184 million in 2017. Yet while ‘bucket and spade’ beach tourism presents major investment opportunities, which a growing number of coun-tries and operators are catering to from North Africa to the Far East, cultural, historical and religious tourism is also coming to the forefront.’
Moreover, Dhaka is being declared as the ‘OIC City of Tourism-2019’.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in a two-day official celebration program of “Dhaka the OIC City of Tourism-2019” in July, “we need an urgent need to flourish our tourism sector to attain our development goals.” “In this case, Islamic tourism is the best possible area where the opportunity and potentials to work together ‘’ she added.
There are more than a hundred Islamic traditions in Bangladesh. Out of which, a project of Tk 1 crore has been proposed for conservation of Islamic heritage and architecture in six places selected in Bangladesh.
Bagerhat city of Bangladesh is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are Khanjahan Ali Rah: shrine and 3 dome mosque. In the city of Sylhet there is a shrine of Shahjalal Rah and Shah Paran.
There are archaeological sites like Ahsan Manzil on the bank of Buriganga in the capital Dhaka, Lalbagh Fort in old Dhaka, Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the National Mosque, Dhaka Gate and next to it the Haji Shahbaz Mosque.
Swimming Pool and Spa, which is one of Halal Travel’s leading men and women, has a limited number of resorts in the country.
Pervaiz Ahmed Chowdhury, principal of the National Hotel and Tourism Training
Institute, said that there are already hotels and resorts in the country for prayers and lawful meals.
He says Bangladesh is also working on all the other benefits of halal traveler. And in the Halal Travel, he feels that Bangladesh will be able to report its position more readily in the world.
According to the State of the Islamic economy report 2018-19, Muslims across the planet want to enjoy their vacation in environments that respect their beliefs and cater their requirements. Such concerns range from providing halal food at restaurants and hotels, to more diverse offerings, such as accommodation that includes prayer rooms, and resorts that have segregated as well as family-friendly facilities at swimming pools and beaches.
In line with the growth of other Islamic economy sectors, Muslims are also hoping for Islamic-themed entertainment, healthcare, shopping and Islamic financing options.
Bangladesh Tourism Board chief executive Dr. Bhuban Chandra Biswas said that the Ministry of Religion and Culture is working together to make the tourist attractions. We have already started working with OIC countries to increase religious and halal tourism.
