No policy yet on shipbuilding

Although shipbuilding is a growing industry in Bangladesh having great potential, the government is yet to formulate a shipbuilding policy.

Bangladesh has over 200 shipbuilding companies, mostly concentrated in Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Barisal and Khulna.

The Norwegian government yesterday offered to give Bangladesh technical assistance to draw up a policy to construct ships in a secured and environment-friendly atmosphere.

Besides, the Norwegian government proposed to formulate a sustainable development policy for Bangladesh's private sector.

According to sources, the industries ministry has taken the initiative, which is still under process, to formulate a shipbuilding policy.

The Norwegian ambassador to Bangladesh, Sidsel Bleken, tabled the proposals during a meeting with Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun at the latter’s office in Motijheel.

The minister told the ambassador that Bangladesh was working to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He requested the ambassador for collaboration to identify sectors in industries that could be developed jointly.

Norwegian ambassador to Bangladesh, Sidsel Bleken also urged Norwegian investors to invest in factories or industrial units and open empty places owned by the industries ministry on a government-to- government, government-private or private-to-private basis.  

The minister further said the government has taken the initiative to build an "industries university" to create skilled manpower, and the Norwegian government can help by providing research, technology and technical assistance.

The Norwegian ambassador assured the minister that her government will consider Bangladesh’s proposal.

Appreciating Bangladesh’s investment-friendly structure, the ambassador said the Norwegian investors have much interest to invest in the renewable energy sector.

The Norwegian government is ready to provide assistance to formulate shipbuilding and private sector development policies, she said.

Shipbuilding has become a major promising industry in recent years and

locally made ships have been exported.

According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), the country earned

USD 30.45 million in the first five months (July-November) of the fiscal year (FY) 2017-18.

In the July-November period of FY 2016-17,

the country exported ships and other floating structures worth USD 5.43 million.

The total export figure for the whole of FY 2016-17 was USD 65.61 million, a growth of 230 per cent from USD 19.89 million in FY 2015-16.
