Bangladesh Film Archive (BFA) celebrated its 40th founding anniversary in the new venue of the organisation at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area in Agargaon of the capital on Thursday.
Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu inaugurated the day long programme, while Director General (DG) of the Film Archive Sachindra Nath Halder and Secretary of Information Ministry Abdul Malek were present at the opening ceremony as special guests.
Filmmaker Morshedul Islam, Syed Salahuddin Zaki, actress Anjana, Rozina and Shahnur among others were present at the programme.
The programme began with the screening of a 1935 Bengali film ‘Debdas’ directed by Pramathesh Barua at the projection hall of the BFA. Based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novella Devdas, Barua himself stars as Devdas, while and Jamuna Barua as Parvati and Chandrabati Devi as Chandramukhi.
As part of the celebration, digital footage from Zahir Raihan’s incomplete film ‘Let There be Light’ was screened.
Later a French film ‘Incident at Owl Creek’ directed by Robert Enrico was also screened at the programme.
Besides, a seminar titled ‘Bangladesh Film Archive: the forty year journey’ was held on the day to mark the founding anniversary. Presided over by DG of BFA Shachindra Nath Halder, expert and writer on Film Anupam Hayat presented keynote speeches, while Amzad Hossain, Morshedul Islam and Jahangir Hossain discussed on the topic.
The day-long programme also featured an exhibition on the poster and photographs of popular yesteryear films like ‘Jiban Theke Neya’, ‘Arunodoyer Agnisakkhi’, ‘Moynamoti’, ‘Sareng Bou’, ‘Chashi Meye’, ‘Chitra Nodir Parey’, ‘Matir Moyna’ and others.
BFA is a film related important department under Information Ministry, which mainly deals with collection and preservation of classical films and film related materials, film related research, publication and implement film appreciation course.
