Bangladesh former head coach Gordon Greenidge, whose guidance not only helped Bangladesh lift the 1997 ICC Trophy but ensured the passport of the 1999 ICC World Cup also,  is expected to arrive here Dhaka on a five-day visit today.

This time the West Indian coach comes not for a cricketing reason. He comes to meet his beloved former protege and colleages to an invitation of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).  The sexagenarian will talk with them and reminisce the epoch-making victory that changed the history of Bangladesh cricket.

His arrival after a long hiatus will be graced when he was given a reception at a local city hotel on Monday.

Former cricketers will throng together under one platform arranged by the BCB.

Akram Khan, BCB director and its cricket operation committee chairman said that Gordon Greenidge was saturated with Bangladesh cricket in an important moment.

“Gordon Greenidge sought to meet with those who played and assisted the then Bangladesh team. We responded to his eagerness and will arrange a reception programme in honour of him in Sanargaon Hotel on Monday,” Akram Khan said.

After winning ACC Champions Trophy in 1996, Bangladesh shifted their main focus on World Cup. For this they girded up their loins so that hey could play in the World Cup. The board had appointed West Indian Gordon Greenidge five months before the 1997 ICC Trophy. They started their intense practice session at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) under his guidline. Therefore, the Tigers led by Akram Khan went to Malaysia to play ICC Trophy in 1997, the victory that changed the wholesale Bangladesh cricket.

By virtue of the historic victory, the entire team along with Greenidge was awarded by the government. Even, Greenidge was given the honorary citizenship. His departure from the Bangladesh team was not happy one because the board sacked him during the 1999 World Cup.

But the BCB invited later him in 2000 when Bangladesh played their debut Test against India at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS).

It’s also learnt that he will inaugurate a golf tournament in Bangladesh during his Dhaka stay.
