Fisheries and Livestock minister Mohammad Sayedul Hoque yesterday formally announced the updated code of conduct for Bangladesh shrimp industry as a part of observing the National Fisheries Week 2015 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
He underscored the importance of introduction and implementation of code of conduct as per internationally recognised norms and standards to ensure the quality and safety of Bangladesh shrimp products. He reiterated the commitment of the government to extend all assistance to the shrimp industry in Bangladesh which is significantly contributing to the national economy in terms of its contribution to GDP, employment generation and country’s export earnings.The code of conduct for Bangladesh shrimp industry was formulated by Department of Fisheries and Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation in 2011 and again updated by them in conformity with the newly enacted US Food Safety Modernization Act and EU Traceability Act in consultation with an internationally reputed law firm SIDLEY AUSTIN, Global Aquaculture Alliance and JIFSAN (Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition), a joint initiative of USFDA and University of Maryland.
The updated Code also added a new segment on processing plants.
The other segments are Bagda & Galda hatchery, Bagda & Galda farm, shrimp collection centers/ depots, ice plants, fishing boats & vessels and shrimp/ fish carrier transport van.The Senior Secretary of Ministry of Commerce Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, who attended the function as a special guest, lauded the efforts of Department of Fisheries and Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation and hoped that the updated Code will help boost the confidence of the international buyers and consumers in Bangladesh shrimp.
Earlier, Syed Mahmudul Huq, chairman of BSFF welcoming the participants in the meeting highlighted the importance of the launching of the code for the future assured accelerated growth of the shrimp industry in Bangladesh.
Mahmudul Karim made the technical presentation on the updated code.
The function chaired by Director General of Dept. of Fisheries Syed Arif Azad was also addressed by Vice Chairman of Export Promotion Bureau Shubashish Bose, representatives of different segments of shrimp industry from the production level and including representatives of Shrimp Hatchery Association, Bangladesh Feed Factory Operators, Bangladesh Aquaculture Alliance and Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association, Country Director, WorldFish Craig Meisner, representatives of EU office and FAO in Dhaka.
The meeting concluded with the expression of full support for the code, continued need to implement them and proactive actions be taken by all stakeholders-the government, particularly Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Ministry of Commerce, Department of Fisheries, Export Promotion Bureau, all stakeholders associations, Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation and supportive development partners and the external collaborators for the successful implementation of the code.
