RAJSHAHI, JAN 24: General Secretary of Rajshahi District Awami League, Member of Parliament Omar Faruque Chowdhury has demanded to implement North Rajshahi Irrigation Project(NRIP) immediately to save the Barind region from the grip of desertification. Omar Faruque Chowdhury also urged the people of Rajshahi to place the issue of NRIP to Jatiya Sangsad on January 25 and demanded the government to implement it for saving millions of people of Barind region from natural disaster.
Omar Faruque Chowdhury was speaking as the chief guest at a function held at the installation ceremony of Bangladesh Water Development Board Contractors’ Association in Rajshahi on Monday night.
He said the demand of implementation of NRIP was the demand of the people of greater Rajshahi as well as of Barind region. Fate of several million people of the region is depending on this irrigation project, moreover, the NRIP will save the Barind region from the grip of desertification.
Supporting the demands of Rajshahi Raskha Sangram Parishad(RRSP), Omar Faruque Chowdhury said, RRSP has been demanding to implement NRIP for more than two decades but the government has not yet taken any positive step to implement it. The demands has turned into a popular demand of the region, he said. 
Presided over by Mahfuzul Alam Loton, President of Water Development Board Cotractors’ Association, the function was attended, among others by, Shafiul Azam, Superintending Engineer of WDB, Rajshahi and Executive Engineer of WDB, Rajshahi Harun-ur-Rashid, General Secretary of WDB Cotractors’ Association Dublew Sarker and former Administrator of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ziaul Haque Tuku.
