RU prof wins prestigious award

RAJSHAHI, OCT 4: Dr M Monzur Hossain, professor of botany department of Rajshahi University, has won the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Peace Award 2011. He won this award for his outstanding contribution for inventing sustainable technology in the field levels, introduction of species of strawberry, developing of seed potato and saplings of Gerbera flower through tissue culture process and for his special research on agriculture.
National Professor Kabir Chowdhury handed over the Mahatma Gandhi Gold Medal through a function organised by Mahatma Gandhi Research Council at National Shishu Academy auditorium on Monday.
 Professor Dr M Monzur Hossain joined Rajshahi University as a lecturer of Botany in 1983. Presently he is working as a professor and researcher with plant breeding and genetic engineering research laboratory at RU. He also won a gold medal for his outstanding Ph.D. research in 1995.
He also won American Shorptimist International Award and received higher degree and gold medal from Yagamata University in Japan in 1995. He won Common Wealth Fellowship in 2002 and bagged Helen Keller Gold Medal in 2011. 
He has more than 200 publications in various local and international journals. So far 21 students conducted Ph. D and 11 students M.Phil degree under his supervision. Professor Monzur Hossain was born at Mohishmari village under Singra Upazila of Natore district in 1957.
