DHAKA, APR 23: Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahid Hossain Ponir has said that freedom of opinion, yellow journalism are contradictory and as such the journalists should exercise their freedom cautiously.
He said, everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression. This right includes freedom to express opinions fearless of the State interference if the speech does not go against the State and religion. It also backs up seeking information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers. ‘In this backdrop, the journalist community can play an important role to promote human rights without resorting to yellow journalism,’ the UNO said.
Referring to Article-12 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Jahid Hossain said that privacy and reputation of every individual must be protected. None has the right to assassin character of other man.
The UNO said this at a regional roundtable discussion on human rights held at Savar Upazil Parishad on April 20 at 10am organized by Relief International in collaboration with National Network for Concerned Journalists.
Savar Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Rokeya Hoque opined that in the present society nothing could be easily achieved without the cooperation of woman. Since one proceeds from another, a man must respect a woman.
The regional roundtable discussion was moderated by Member-Secretary of National Network for Concerned Journalists (NNCJ ) Promatha Ranjan Biswas and it is addressed by Upazil Parishad Vice Chairman Abdul Ghani, Savar University College Principal Elias Khan, Upazila Primary Education Officer Ajit Kumar Sarker, Upazila Election Officer Momin Miah, Upazila Engneer Delwar hossain Majumder, Upazila Social Welfare Officer Raknul Hoque, DUJ Office Secretary Barun Bhowmick Nayan, UCR Instructor Johra Khatun, Public Prosecutor Abdul Awal, Mahbuba Akhtar and Savar Upazila correspondents of different dailies.
