TANGAIL, FEB 2: A total of 23 persons were killed and 80 injured in January in Tangail. Of the total four, including a veteran freedom fighter and district Awami League leader, were murdered and 19 others were killed in road accidents.
One day-labourer was cut under the wheels of a train in Tangail on January 2. He was identified as Ismail Hossain (50) of village Chanamula under Bhuapur upazila of Tangail district.
Police of Ghatail recovered the body of a rice trader on January 12. He was identified as Azhar Mia (50), son of Moslim Uddin of village Noorpara under Ghatail upazila of Tangail district. It is gathered that miscreants abducted him, looted money from him and left the body near a bridge of the area after killing.
A mail packer of Madhupur Sub-Post office was killed in a road mishap on January 13. He was identified as Jotindra Mohan Das (56) of village Sialkol under Bhuapur upazila of Tangail district.
Five people, including an army personnel, were killed and 14 others injured in a road accident in Tangail on January 14 afternoon. The accident occurred at Saheratoil on Dhaka-Bangabandhu Bridge highway under Kalihati
The dead were identified as soldier of 98 Bangabandhu Bridge Mixed Brigade Habibullah (30), Shukur Ali (60) of village Kalihati, Suruzzaman (60) and Rahim Box (55) of village Polosia under Bhuapur upazila. Identity of the other person was not known.
Helalul Islam, OC of Bangabandhu Bridge Police Station, said that the accident occurred when a bus and a truck collided head-on. Two passengers of the bus were killed on the spot and 17 persons injured. They were rushed to Tangail General Hospital. Habibullah died on the way to hospital and Rahim Box died at the hospital.
A motorcycle rider was killed in road mishap in Madhupur on January 14. He was identified as Sourov (20), son of Omer Ali of village Mirzapur under Madhupur upazila. Three people, including a rider and two other co-riders, were injured. The rider died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Two other co-riders were admitted to hospital.
A man killed his niece in Tangail on January 15. She was identified as Tuasha (5), daughter of Motaleb Mia of village Gorosthanpara under Kalihati upazila of Tangail district. A farm labourer was electrocuted in Tangail on January 16. He was identified as Shaheed Mia (40) of village Vabla under Kalihati upazila of Tangail district.
Veteran freedom fighter, member of Tangail district Awami League and president of Tangail Upazila BRDB, Farook Ahmed (60), was gunned down at College Para at 11.30 pm on January 18. He was killed by some unknown miscreants. The body was kept 150 yards distance from his house situated at Tangail College Para.
One passenger was killed 15 others were injured in a road mishap on January 18. The accident occurred at Hatubangha on Dhaka-Tangail highway under Mirzapur upazila. The accident occurred when a bus fell into a roadside ditch. Dulal Chandra Mondol (45) was killed and 15 others were injured. The injured persons were admitted to Mirzapur Kumuddini Medical College Hospital.
A youth was cut under a train in Tangail on January 20. He was identified as Gazi Mia (23), son of Abdur Rahman of village Hinnaipara under Kalihati upazila of Tangail district.
Five passengers of a bus were killed 40 others sustained injury in a road accident in Tangail on January 22 noon. The accident occurred at Baniajan on Tangail-Jamalpur highway under Dhanbari upazila of Tangail district.
Officer In-Charge of Dhanbari Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, said that a driver of the bus belonging to Sakil Paribahan coming from Dhaka and bound for Roumari lost its control and the vehicle fell into the roadside ditch at 12.30 noon. Four passengers of the bus died on the spot. At least 41 passengers sustained injury. One died on the way to hospital.
The identities of the three deceased are known. They are Arfan Ali ( 40), son of the late Matin Mia of village Khodaimari, Taslim Uddin (42), son of the late Inshu Sheikh of village East Ezlabari of Roumari upazila under Kurigram district, Noor Islam (50), son of Azizul Hoque of village Kasigong of Bokshigonj upazila under Jamalpur district.
Two persons were killed three others sustained injury in a road mishap in Tangail on January 23 morning. The mishap occurred on Dhaka-Tangail highway at Zamurki under Mirzapur upazila of Tangail district. Of two deceased, identity of one was known. He was Abdul Jalil (60) of village Zamorki under Mirzapur upazila.
Police recovered a body hanging with a tree on January 26. He was identified as Khondoker Istiaq Mia, son of Nurul Islam of village Konda under Nogarpur upazila.
Abdul Kader Bapan (24), organizing secretary of Tangail district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, was injured critically on January 20 while picketing at Biawas Betka Godown Bazaar in protest against killing Awami League leader Farook Ahmed. Tangail AL called half day hartal on the day. Bapan was injured in a clash with anti-hartal business community of the area. Bapan died at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar on January 29 at 3PM.
