World Theatre Day 2016 was observed on March 27 in a befitting manner. On the occasion, country’s prominent theatre organisations such as Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF), International Theatre Institute Bangladesh, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) and Pothonatok Parishad jointly arranged a programme at the Mahila Samity Auditorium in the city’s Baily Road area. Besides, a rally--from BSA to Mahila Samity premises--was brought out by the theatre leaders and activists to mark the day. They also demanded justice for Tonu wearing black badges. Later on, a discussion was held as a part of the programme, which was attended by prominent theatre personalities.
Hosted by BGTF general secretary Akhtaruzzaman, veteran theatre personality Lucky Inam read a citation, while BGTF chairman Liaquat Ali Lucky delivered the welcome speech in the programme. Noted thespian Jhuna Chowdhury and Deboprasad Debnath, among others, were present at the event. On the other hand, for her noteworthy contribution to the theatre arena of the country, noted theatre personality Ferdousi Majumdar was honoured with the World Theatre Day Award at the programme. Veteran thespian Nasiruddin Yousuff handed over the award to her. Ferdousi Majumdar expressed her gratitude and demanded justice for Tonu, “Honour, laughs-clapped, outburst—this is my greatest achievement. World Theatre Day is a joyous occasion for the whole world. But this time around, there is a sad mood somewhere. The world is getting spoiled day by day. The murder of Tonu shocked all of us. Though I have received award, I am feeling depressed someway. Lets everyone want together that we will not be stopped, until the criminals get punished.” After the discussion session, Islamuddin Palakar enthralled the audience with his pala gaan ‘Komola Ronger Sagordighee’.
