Prime suspect arrested

Police yesterday arrested the prime suspect in the killing of a schoolboy at Gagla in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh on Monday night.
The arrestee was Shah Alam, 20, of neighbouring Nazirpur village.
The boy identified as Rafiqul Islam, 10, son of day labourer Osman Gani of Gagla, was found dead at Gagla village on Monday night.
Victim’s mother Rumela Khatun earlier lodged a case with Gouripur Police Station accusing Shah Alam of murder.
Md Akhtar Morshed, officer-in-charge of Gouripur Police Station, quoting the first information report (FIR) said one Shah Alam was engaged by Suraiya Akhtar, a candidate for reserved seat,  ward No- 3 in Achintyapur Union Parishad. But the man hired Rafiqul as a helping hand for Tk 100 on a daily basis and did not pay him any money for four days.
This had resulted in a brawl between the two, the OC said adding that as Rafiqul refused to work anymore without payment Shah Alam hacked and critically injured Rafiqul on Monday night.
Duty doctor at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital declared him when Rafiqul was tajen there at around 9:30pm.
As the news spread, the fellow students brought out a protest procession in the area and attacked  the house of Shah Alam. At one stage, the students torched the tin-shade house. The agitated students caught Shah Alam, who was trying to flee from home, after a long chase and handed over to police after giving a good beating, said the OC.
Shah Alam confessed to his involvement in the killing when he was produced before a Mymensingh court yesterday afternoon. Shah Alam has been sent to jail.
