A Narayanganj court yesterday sent Rafiur Rabbi, the father of slain schoolboy Tanvir Mohammad Twaki, to jail in a case filed over cheque forgery. First Additional District and Sessions Judge Miazi Mohammad Shahidul Alam Chowdhury passed the order in the morning, rejecting Rabbi's bail plea. Jalal Uddin Ahmed, the uncle-in-law of Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman, filed the case in April 2012 against Rabbi, who is also the convenor of Santrash Nirmul Mancha. The case statement said, Rabbi gave two cheques for Tk70 lakh to Jalal on February 8, 2012, but the cheques were dishonoured. Rabbi’s lawyer said, a man named Shamim Quadri bought 30 decimals of land from Rabbi and later sold it to Jalal. Later a meeting decided that Jalal would return the land to Rabbi taking Tk 70 lakh. Rabbi gave two blank cheques to Jalal’s lawyer, who was present at the meeting, claimed Rabbi’s lawyer.
The lawyer claimed that Jalal did not return the land to his client and he himself wrote the cheques for Tk70 lakh, which were dishonoured at the bank. Earlier, Rabbi was sentenced to a one-year imprisonment in the case. The court also fined Rabbi Tk 2.10 crore. Rabbi filed an appeal with the High Court against the verdict and submitted Tk35 lakh. The HC rejected his plea and sent all relevant documents to the district court. The documents reached the court on March 13 and it asked Rabbi to surrender.
