BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will announce the party’s ‘Vision 2030’ at a press conference on Wednesday. This will contain numerous promises including the introduction of bicameral parliaments, reducing the prime ministerial power and turning the country into a upper-middle income country by 2030, according to party sources. Political leaders, including those of the ruling Awami League and opposition Jatiya Party, diplomats and civil society members, have been invited to attend the press conference at Hotel Westine at 4:30pm, said the BNP chairperson’s media wing officer Shairul Kabir Khan.
Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia will convene a meeting with the party’s standing committee members tonight at her Gulshan office to discuss and take a final look at Vision 2030. She will also have the programme approved by the party's highest policymaking body. Some intellectuals, university teachers and diplomats who are not directly involved with BNP politics have finalised the draft of ‘Vision 2030’ after working on it for about one year.
‘Vision 2030’ will suggest introduction of a referendum system in the Constitution for taking any decision on issues of national importance. It will also introduce three Gs—good policy, good governance and good government—to ensure good governance in the country, sources said.
However, ‘Vision 2030’ is different from the party's election manifesto or demand for a planned election-time supportive government. BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said that the party's ‘Vision 2030’ has been prepared in line with the outline given by the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, during the party's national council on March 19.
“Our leader, Begum Khaleda Zia, will give details of the outline of ‘Vision 2030’ that she had given at the last council,” he said.
He, however, said if the BNP takes part in the next general elections, its election manifesto will be prepared on the basis of ‘Vision 2030’.
