Lalmatia Club captain Faisal Ahmed Boni pleaded Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) mercy after he was banned for five years from the cricket under the board’s jurisdiction.
Boni was suspended due to be unable to control his bowler Sujon Mahmud who conceded 92 runs in four legal deliveries in his side’s Dhaka Second Division Cricket League match against Axiom Cricketers last month, peppering the field with 15 no balls and 13 wides that also raced to the boundary.
Boni said he wasn’t aware of the bowler’s plan and once he got the point he was unable to resist him from doing this insane act.
“Nothing was in my control. I told him to send down legal deliveries but he didn’t pay heed to me,” Boni told the reporters yesterday.
When asked why he didn’t change the bowler, Boni said he couldn’t change the bowler since the over wasn’t over.
“If he doesn’t send down six balls clearly, how can I change him? The situation was out of my control at that moment.”
“Today I am here (Mirpur Stadium) to meet CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury,” he said adding that, “I told him that I know nothing about the bowler’s plan. I wasn’t even the regular captain of the team. I was handed captaincy because the regular captain Niloy was busy with other indoor games.”
“I personally came here after knowing through media that captain was also banned. But since I didn’t know anything, I wanted to clear my position to the BCB.”
The CEO however told him to apply to the board.
Boni said he wasn’t even aware that the incident resulted to a harsh punishment.
“I really can’t understand anything even before the match. Boni however declined that any biased umpiring was happened during this match saying, “One or two decisions of umpire might be wrong. In every game it happened. But in that match umpiring was good above.
Something happened such way that no one can understand it. Even as a captain I couldn’t understand it.”
“I am innocent and I will write to BCB seeking clemency. Hopefully I will get the mercy.”
The unprecedented incident of giving away 92 runs in four deliveries hogged International headline which BCB though the club and bowler did do intentionally to tarnish the image of the country.
The board had formed a special committee to look into the fiasco where Sujon Mahmud, the bowler, had conceded 92 runs off four balls while playing for Lalmatia Club against Axiom Cricketers. The four legal deliveries were hit for 12 runs by Axiom opener Mustafizur Rahman as they completed a 10-wicket win in 0.4 overs. In the 50-over match in question earlier this month, Lalmatia were dismissed for 88 in 14 overs.
During the investigation the BCB’s special committee found that Fear Fighters Sporting Club’s Tasnim Hasan had also voluntarily conceded 69 runs in 1.1 overs against Indira Road Krira Chakra in protest of alleged biased umpiring, on the day before the Lalmatia-Axiom game.
Both Tasnim and Sujon have been banned for 10 years each while their clubs, Lalmatia and Fear Fighters, have been scratched from playing in any division of the Dhaka league. Captains, managers and coaches of both teams have also been handed five-year suspensions.
