State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid yesterday told Parliament that it will not be realistic to expand the gas connection network to new districts right now, reports UNB.
"At present, the supply of gas against its demand is insufficient. Under this circumstance, the situation will get worse if the gas connection network is expanded," he said while responding to a starred question from Nurjahan Begum (Women Seat-42) in the House.
The junior minister said the government has taken various steps to increase the gas production keeping pace with the demand.
He also said although the gas production saw a significant rise in the last couple of years, it had not been possible to supply gas as per the demand of the consumers in many cases. "Currently, the supply of gas is 2750 mmcfd against the demand of 3400 mmcfd," he said.
The government is providing connections to industries on a limited scale following recommendations of the committee, led by the Prime Minister's energy adviser, without expanding the gas connection network, Nasrul Hamid said.
