The long-standing internal feud in the Chittagong city unit of the ruling Awami League (AL) between ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, the president of the city unit of the party and former city mayor, and AJM Nasir Uddin, secretary of the city unit and incumbent Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) mayor, has once again boiled over following some controversial decisions by Nasir Uddin.
The ongoing mudslinging between the two top AL leaders in Chittagong has put the party and its leaders and activists in a spot.
Many leaders and activists of the AL and its different wings expressed deep concern over the ongoing tussle between the two top leaders, pointing that the opportunists would gain if the brouhaha persists and only the party would stand to lose.
Khurshed Alam Sujan, joint secretary of the AL city unit, told The Independent, “Though the tussle is between the two leaders over some issues that are outside the party, we are facing the heat to some extent. However, we expect the dispute would be resolved soon.”
Meanwhile, eight eminent citizens issued a statement yesterday (Monday) expressing their concern and described the war of words as “unexpected”.
They said, “The news published in newspapers in recent days on the tussle between the former and present mayors has made conscious people surprised and concerned.”
“The mayor is the first elected citizen of the city. He has a lot of duties. The city’s residents have a lot of expectations from him. The present and former mayors should both understand it,” they said in the joint statement. They added, “They should immediately stop such mud-slinging.”
The eight citizens were: Prof. Sikandar Khan, Begum Mushtari Shafi, MA Malek, Prof. Dr. Mainul Islam, Dr Mahabubul Haque, advocate Rana Dasgupta, Abul Momen and Dr Shamsul Hossain.
They also blamed the internal feud among the political parties for the fact that Chittagong has not developed as much as it should, even though the port city is the country’s business capital.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury, at a rally held at Laldigi Ground on April 10, announced that they were going to send a proposal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to remove the AL-backed mayor, AJM Nasir Uddin, as he is "incompetent, frail and worthless”. Chowdhury was incensed by the activities of the present mayor.
Alleging that Nasir has failed as mayor, Chowdhury claimed that he was not paying attention to the problems of the city’s people as he was always busy with his business at Chittagong Port. However, Nasir said Chowdhury “tells lies while wearing his cap”.
The city AL unit is divided into two major factions: Mohiuddin Chowdhury leads one camp while the other is headed by Nasir. The two top leaders of the AL in Chittagong are known to be arch-rivals who are seeking to control the operations of Chittagong port and the running of Premier University.
Abdul Latif, MP, is also known as a leader of the anti-Mohiuddin Chowdhury faction. Nasir Uddin had stood solidly behind Latif.
In the last CCC polls, Mohiuddin Chowdhury had declared himself the mayoral candidate from the (AL-backed) Nagorik Committee, allegedly without the central AL’s consent. The anti-Mohiuddin Chowdhury leaders asserted that he should not contest in the elections as his health was poor and he had no rapport with the Hindu community. They also cited his dispute with senior leaders.
