Kanthashilon recalls Waheedul Haque today

Kanthashilon, a well-known recitation organisation, is set to organise a special programme marking the 84th birth anniversary of Tagore exponent and cultural activist Waheedul Haque at the Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of the Central Public Library in the capital today.
The programme will feature poetry recitations by the artists of Kanthashilon. Besides recitation, Kanthashilon will distribute certificates to students of Abartan 85, 86 and 87 batches for successfully completing the correct pronunciation and recitation course.
In the second part of the programme, Kanthashilon recitation production titled ‘Amar Janmabhumi’ will be staged. Written on the 1952 Language Movement and the 1971 Liberation War, the production has been directed by Ila Rahman.
Born on March 16, 1933, Haque -- also a writer, journalist and a founder member Kanthashilon – was a campaigner-activist for social-political-cultural causes and an founder of several cultural institutions.
He was one of the founding members of Chhayanaut in 1961. Chhayanaut played a vital role in the cultural-political scenario during the late 1960s, prior to the country’s liberation war.
He was also the founder member of Nalonda, Anandadhani, Fulki, Bratochari Samity and Bashanto Utsab Udjapon Parishad. He also formed the Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad in 1980.
Haque was also involved in filmmaking and the film society movement during the 1960s. Being an expert musian, he also worked with Indian director Ritwik Ghatak’s for the musical scores of film Titash Ekti Nadir Naam.
Haque’s major works are ‘Gaaner Bhetor Diye’, ‘Chetona Dharaye Esho’, and ‘Shangskriti Jagaraner Protham Shurjo’. He received Ekushey Padak for music in 2008 and Independence Day Award in cultural category in 2010.
Waheedul Haque died at Birdem Hospital in the capital on January 27 in 2007.
