The sister of sub-inspector Akram, who died in a road accident, met the investigating officer (IO) of the Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case in Chittagong yesterday. Mitu was the wife of former superintendent of police (SP) Babul Akter.
Around 10.30 am, Jannat Ara Parveen and her niece Murshida Jahan Dolly came to the Detective Branch (DB) office at the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) headquarters. They met the IO around 12.40 pm and left after an hour.
Rini told reporters later that she had some complaints against Babul Akter.
“They had come to talk to me, as they had some complaints against Babul Akter. I have heard their complaint,” said the deputy police commissioner of the DB, Md Kamruzzaman, who is also the IO of the Mitu murder case.
“I cannot disclose their complaints for the sake of investigation,” he added.
Nine months after the murder of Mitu, Parveen has suddenly come up with allegations against Babul. According to her, Babul had a connection with the death of Akram. Leaving the DB office yesterday, she alleged, “Mitu and Akram were killed because of Babul’s illicit relationship. Owing to Babul’s influence, we couldn't file a case after Akram’s murder. The murder was fabricated as a road accident. Babul was involved in the murder, although he was out of the country then.”
“We had come here to demand justice for Akram. If Babul and Borny are quizzed, the mystery of Akram’s murder will come out,” Rini claimed.
In a press briefing, she alleged that Borny, wife of SI Akram, has an illicit relationship with Babul.
Borny has denied the allegations and so has Babul. The former SP rubbished these allegations in a Facebook post recently.
Mitu, 32, wife of Babul Akter, was stabbed and shot dead near her home at GEC Circle in Chittagong by a group of motorcycle-borne assailants when she was escorting her son to the school bus on June 5, 2016.
On June 24, Babul was quizzed for 15 hours after being picked up from his father-in-law’s Banashri house where he was living after the murder.
On September 6, a gazette notification from the home affairs ministry said Babul had been terminated from his post. This came after Babul apparently submitted his resignation letter willingly on August 9. Initially, Babul’s in-laws did not make any allegations against babul. But now, they have made a U-turn.
