Grameen Telecom sued for denying dividends

Four separate cases have been filed in the labour court against Grameen Telecom chairman Muhammad Yunus and its managing director Ashraful Hassan for not paying dividends to its employees.

Four former employees of Grameen Telecom filed the cases in Labour Court III against Yunus and Ashraful for not paying dividends to employees from its Tk 2,158.65 crore profits earned during the past 10 years.
After preliminary hearing on the petitions, Labour Court III chairman Sultan Mahmud accepted the cases for trial.
Former Grameen Telecom assistant officer Sajibur Rahman and three former senior officers—Abu Sufian, Gulshan Ahmed and ASM Saiful Islam—filed the cases yesterday (Wednesday).
The petitioners alleged that they were not paid dividends during the period under review. They also alleged that none of the 110 Grameen Telecom employees were paid their dividends of Tk. 86.34 crore out of Tk. 2,158.65 crore that the company earned as profits in the past 10 years. This was in gross violation of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, amended in 2013.
With the four, a total of seven cases have been filed against Yunus and Ashraf, accusing that both of them had flouted the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 by refusing to pay dividends to workers from its Tk. 2,158.65 crore profits earned during the period. On Tuesday, three former Grameen Telecom employees— assistant manager Amir Hossain, former senior officer Hanjala Ibrahim and former assistant officer Mostafa Al Amin—filed separate cases in the same court.
Labour ministry secretary Mikail Shipar and the ministry’s Workers’ Welfare Foundation Fund director general ANM Anisul Awal have been made substitute defendants in all seven cases.
Dr Yunus is chairman of Grameen Telecom, which has 3420 shareholders in the largest telecom operator, Grameenphone Limited, in Bangladesh in terms of revenue.
