Terming the SME sector as the driving force of the country’s economic growth, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said SME is playing a vital role to accelerate the export growth, diversification of products, employment generation and poverty alleviation of the country.
The minister said while addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the “National Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Fair-2017” organised by SME Foundation at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.
Amu said government is committed to ensure sustainable and environment-friendly green industrialization aimed at turning the country developed one in the globe. “To fulfill the commitment, small and medium industries are being established across the country considering the availability of raw materials,” he added.
Among others, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki and Senior Secretary of Industries Ministry M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan were present in the function.
SME Foundation Chairman K M Habib Ullah presided over the inaugural ceremony.
According to the Bureau of Statistics, the contribution of industrial sector in the country’s GDP growth was 31.54 per cent in 2015-16 while it was 30.42 per cent in 2014-15.
He said the government has kept a provision to allocate 10 per cent plots for the SME women entrepreneurs in the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Cooperation (BISIC) industrial cities for enhancing the women participation in the SME sector.
He also urged the private sector to come forward for achieving the aim of sustainable and environment—friendly green industrialisation side by side the government.
Around 200 SME institutions are exhibiting their products, including Jute, agriculture and leather products.
According to SME foundation officials, 95 institutions from food and beverage, 26 institutions from handicrafts, 21 institutions from jute, 26 institutions from leather and 32 institutions from other sectors have been participated in this fair. The exhibitors are offering discount on their product at the fair. Bounty food and Beverage Ltd was showcasing their exclusive food item “Pappadums” at the fair.
Talking to the reporters, Managing Director of Bounty Food and Beverage Ltd Alaur Rahman told The Independent “Pappadums’ is a thin, crisp, disc-shaped food item which costs Tk 60, but only for this fair we are selling it for Tk 50.
