Kushtia: A ‘Woman Market’, the first of its kind in Khulna division, is going to be built in Kumarkhali upazila of the district, aiming to create self-employment opportunities for women, reports UNB.
Upazila administration sources said the market is being constructed on 5 yards of land adjacent to Shilpakala Academy of the upazila headquarters.
Mahmudul Islam, upazila project implementation officer, said primarily eight shops will be built in the market involving around TK 10 lakh. The work on the market, being built under Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Programme (2016-17 year), is expected to be end by the current month.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saleha Akhter said primarily eight shops will be allocated for poor and trained women. If demand increases, the number of shops will be raised to provide opportunities to more women, she said.
Abdul Mannan Khan, chairman of the upazila, said that already around 70 women have been provided with training on sewing, bakery, beautification and computer.
The trained women will be given priority during the allotment of the shops, added the UP chairman.
A large number of woman of the district are involved in producing lungi, sharee and bed sheet using loom. Women who are interested to sell these products will be given priority in allocation of shops in the market.
