It is really good to know that a local organization called Insight Bangladesh Foundation is providing legal advice on various kinds of cyber crime free of cost to those who are asking for it. If someone calls 01766678888, the IBF’s helpline with its panel of 10 lawyers will immediately respond to it. The lawyer’s panel is ready to assist the victim. Before the service was available 24 hours every day, but since there is hardly any complainant during the night hours, the IBF’s voluntary service is now limited to 9 AM to 6 PM.
In Bangladesh, people are increasingly becoming victims of cyber crime, yet they are not aware of what should they do in its response. According to a report published in this newspaper yesterday, every second a total of 12 Facebook IDs are being opened. All the Facebook IDs are not genuine and through fake IDs some are engaged in committing crimes as well as promoting militancy and different unsocial activities. These kinds of crimes are becoming rampant and in many cases they have the potential to tear the social fabric of our society. That is why strong measures are needed to counter the cyber crime.
When the law enforcing agencies are being unable to track or contain the increasing number of cyber crimes in Bangladesh, it is expected that more philanthropic groups will come in aid of the victims of cyber crimes like Insight Bangladesh Foundation that has been providing free legal aid for the past three years. It is expected that the government would be all ready to provide necessary help to such ventures as it did in the case of IBF. The government’s ICT Division provided logistical and other supports in its first year.
Besides the voluntary initiative of people, the government also needs to increase its capacity to tackle the increasing number of cyber crime in Bangladesh. There are many kinds of cyber crimes including fraud and financial crimes—one great example of it is Bangladesh Bank heist—; cyberterrorism; cyberextortion; cyberwarfare; computer as a target with computer viruses, denial-of-service attacks, malware; computer as a tool; obscene and offensive comment; harassment; etc.
For countering better with these crimes, it is necessary to work more on the policy making level as the IBF executive director pointed out. Besides there is the supreme need of making people aware of the extent of crimes.
